The River Hills community was created in the early 1970s and accommodates nearly 1,100 homes. After several serious medical calls arose with a response time of 20-30 minutes, the River Hills residents decided to create a local ambulance service. In late 1977, an emergency squad was officially founded, consisting of EMTs and trained drivers. 

By 1980, the River Hills emergency squad began taking calls. River Hills began with an extremely limited call volume, but it has increased to roughly 2200 calls in 2022. Today, the River Hills/Lake Wylie emergency squad operates 24/7 with a truck staffed by a Paramedic and an EMT dedicated to providing basic and advanced life support services to all areas of York County.
